Food culture has become globalised in most parts of the world where food imports are high. InBarbados we import over 700 million dollars in food annually and it rises every year further expanding our dependence on foreign imports. Looking around at our country one can see many fruits falling from trees not eaten or sold, some of these once were a huge part of our Barbadian food culture. One of these is the grapefruit the other turmeric and yet another the sour orange for marmalade. We at Slow Food believe that food creates culture and we are dedicated to enhancing a sense of place by nominating several Ark of Taste items, such as the ones above, that will contribute to our enhanced sense of place through the reintroduction of these products to the Barbadian market.
